Good sapphire jewelry care starts with a few simple habits. Careful cleaning, separate storage, and attention to the setting can help you keep a favorite ring or pendant looking its best.
Sapphire is durable, but durability does not mean a piece of jewelry needs no care. The gemstone, its treatment history, and the surrounding metal all matter when choosing a cleaning method.
Know Your Gemstone Before Cleaning
Sapphire belongs to the corundum family and has a Mohs hardness of 9. This gives it strong resistance to scratching, although it can still be damaged.
Keep the gemstone’s report and treatment information where you can find them. If you do not know how the stone has been treated, ask a jeweler before using specialist cleaning equipment or strong cleaning products.
Use a Gentle Cleaning Routine
For most sapphires, warm soapy water is a suitable cleaning method. Use gentle movements and avoid forceful scrubbing. Fracture-filled or cavity-filled stones require particular care; GIA recommends cleaning these with a damp cloth.
Prepare a small bowl rather than cleaning directly over an open sink. After cleaning, make sure the jewelry is dry before returning it to storage. For a mounted stone, also consider any other gemstones in the piece.
Be Careful With Cleaning Machines
Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are not suitable for every gemstone or treatment. If you are uncertain, let a knowledgeable jewelry professional assess the piece and choose the method.
Do not assume that a cleaning method used for one ring is suitable for every item in your collection.
Store Pieces Separately
Use individual soft pouches or separate compartments in a jewelry box. This makes it easier to avoid pieces rubbing against each other and keeps chains, settings, and stones organized.
For loose gemstones, use a suitable gemstone case or padded container. Handle them over a soft surface, and keep each stone’s identification details with its storage box.
Check the Setting Regularly
Before wearing a sapphire ring, take a moment to look at the setting. If the stone moves, a prong appears bent, or the ring catches unusually on clothing, stop wearing it until a jeweler checks it.
Remove jewelry before tasks that involve impacts or harsh cleaning products. Small habits are easier to maintain than repairing damage later.
If you are choosing a gemstone for a new piece, ask Ceylon Smart Gems for its treatment details and discuss the finished jewelry’s care requirements with your jeweler.
